The Philadelphia Phillies have comprised a star studded rotation featuring Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton. Hamels, Halladay and Oswalt all pitched under 3.06 ERA for the Phils last year. Joe Blanton also had a respectable 4.82 ERA in the back end of the rotation.
Now enter Cliff Lee into the equation. Lee had a 3.18 ERA last year with the Mariners and Rangers. It could’ve been lower, but Lee ran into a tough stretch in the middle of the season.
I’m not saying anything that people don’t already know, but the Phillies rotation is simply the best in baseball. No one else can compete. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and admire what they’ve put together.
These guys all have a chance to underachieve a little, but in the end, when they’re playing in a playoff matchup, I’m going to take the Phillies every time.
Perhaps the scariest part of the whole rotation though, is that they had the 6th best ERA last year. Now they have Mr. Lee.
Then you can throw the re-invented Brad Lidge as the closer, and move Kyle Hendrick to the bullpen, and I don’t see a big weakness in the bullpen.
Each of these starters need to be owned on rosters. Hamels, Oswalt, Halladay and Lee all probably in the early rounds. Blanton could be worth a shot as a late round flyer, because some people believe he’s a sleeper this year.
Philadelphia Phillies, I’ll meet back up with you guys at the World Series later this year.
