The Browns have recently fired head coach Eric Mangini. It was believed at one point during the season that the Browns were definitely headed in the right direction, but they ended the season on a four game skid, losing to teams like the lowly Bengals and Bills, and getting pulverized by the Steelers.
It was proven throughout the season that they didn’t have the ability to score points. Peyton Hillis played very well throughout the season but when they got in the red zone, QB Colt McCoy was often unable to punch it in. It was mainly his poor quarterback play that held them to ranking 31st in points scored averaging just 16.9 ppg. The defense was middle of the road; combine that with the putrid offense, and you get a 5-11 team.
Now Mangini is gone, and it looks like Mike Holmgren could move to the sideline. If anyone can develop Colt McCoy, it’s him. I think we’re all familiar with his success with young quarterbacks. McCoy could develop into a decent QB, but it’s pretty evident he’s not going to be a star. If he can improve next year, with the help of a good receiver, they will threaten, but with the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals in the division, it could be hard to break out of the cellar.
It looks like they are starting to get the right pieces to the puzzle, but it’s happened to so many teams appearing to be on the rise such as the Lions, Dolphins and Cowboys. Could be another tough year, but with Holmgren at the helm of decisions, he could turn it around for the franchise very soon.
